Medicines have benefits and some have risks. Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist or you have side effects see your health professional. Brands and generics both contain the same active ingredient(s) and are medically equivalent. Some brands are marketed under different names by the same manufacturer depending on the country of origin. Images are provided as a reference only, the received medicine may vary in packaging, color, pill shape, etc, from one batch to the next. For an item marked "generic" any quality brand may be sent, however you will always receive the active ingredients ordered in the strength(s) ordered.
Acitretin is the generic name for a retinoid---or vitamin A derivative---used in cases of severe psoriasis. Though additional uses are off-label, patients also buy acitretin to treat Darier's disease, palmoplantar pustulosis, lichen planus, and Sjogren-Larsson syndrome. In all cases acitretin is used when other, milder medications have proven ineffective.
It is not fully understood how acitretin works. A metabolite of etretinate, it is known to delay cell division and influence the way cells grow and shed. Patients typically buy acitretin under the brand names Soriatane or Neotigason.
Use of acitretin is generally reserved for adults. Children may be given the medication only with explicit doctor approval, when the benefits outweigh the risks.
What to Expect from Treatment
As mentioned above, patients are typically given a prescription to buy acitretin when other medications have failed to produce results, or when other medications cannot be taken due to allergies or other reasons. This is a potent medication and doctor instructions should be followed closely.
The medication comes in either 10 mg or 25 mg tablets; it is not available in any other strength. Tablets are taken once per day, ideally with a meal or milk.
Treatment is similar in all conditions:
It will take 8 to 16 weeks for improvements to be seen in most patients. A small minority may see improvements before the 8-week mark. Some patients experience a worsening of the condition for up to 16 weeks, after which time it should begin to improve.
Treatment should continue until lesions are gone or until the 6-month mark. Use of acitretin beyond 6 months has not been studied and effects are unclear. The medication stays present in the body for up to three years after treatment ends, during which time patients should stay lesion-free. The condition will likely begin to resurface after three years, at which time patients may buy acitretin again and repeat treatment.
Warnings Before Use
Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not buy acitretin, as the medication is known to cause severe birth defects. Women of childbearing age may need to demonstrate proof they are not pregnant. Women are also advised to use two forms of birth control, and since progesterone will not be as effective while acitretin is being taken, one of those methods cannot be progesterone based. As the medication is present in the body for three years following treatment, these two methods of birth control should be utilized for three years after treatment ends.
The medication is also present in sperm, though it's unclear whether it is in quantities sufficient to cause birth defects. Men who buy acitretin may want to avoid getting a woman pregnant during treatment and for three years after treatment.
Both genders should avoid giving blood during treatment and for three years after.
Many other medications can interfere with acitretin, some of which mean acitretin should not be taken. Others do not necessarily mean it cannot be used, but require special monitoring for developing side effects. Check with a doctor or pharmacist before taking any other medication for the duration of treatment.
